"Dream-Drift"
The artist has enjoyed a richly diversified cultural education and experience. A great influence upon her life was her mother, Lucille W. Burkett, a talented and inspired artist as well as an educator and dancer — originally from Barbados, British West Indies. Angela completed San Luis Rey Academy's Creative Arts Program of integrated studies in 1974 under Dr. Brenda Montiel Jackson. In 1980, she graduated with a BA in Music from UC Santa Barbara, while studying classical piano under pianist Dusi Mura of Romania. For 10 years, the artist worked as a picture framer with her own shop in Del Mar the last 5 years. She also taught picture framing worksops locally, as well as drawing and painting classes for children and adults.
Angela studied studio art for many years under Cal Fortbrook at the Athenaeum School of the Arts in La Jolla. In 1999, she moved to Aberdeen, Scotland to study art, poetry, literature, languages and their inter-relationship, graduating in 2004 with an MA in Divinity from the University of Aberdeen.
The artist then proceeded on to postgraduate work at Robert Gordon University, Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen, and at the University of Edinburgh Art History Department while continuing art studio courses at the Edinburgh College of Art under abstract painter Paul Keir and at the Leith School of Art, Edinburgh with Paul Martin.
The essence of her work springs from a spiritual perspective of all things and ideas. With a combined British-Caribbean and American heritage, and with a passion and love for poetics, qualities of the integrated arts are interwoven in her works — whether visual, musical or literary. She is also developing ideas for artists books, combining literary ideas with artistic reponses.
